FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What prompted you to become a Sister of St. Joseph? Most of us would say that somewhere along our journey, we met questions such as: Isn't there more to life? Do I really believe in a God who loves me and calls me? Can I live the Gospel message in a more profound way? Could religious life provide me with a way of living and ministering that seems suited to me?
What was that first step? We needed to talk to someone. Some of us talked with a sister we knew and admired, to a spiritual director, a priest, or a mentor. Generally, the first conversation was the most difficult but eventually we managed to ask, in some form or other, "Could religious life be an option for me?"
How long did all this take? Generally, a woman will be in dialogue for at least a year before making formal application to the community. Some women continue the dialogue for a longer time. The movement into religious life is gradual. Ordinarily, a woman lives as a candidate in a local community for two years. Then, she spends another two years as a novice in the community. Her novitiate ends her first profession of vows. She may pronounce her final vows between three and six years after her first profession.
